Half a kilometre east of the main road, a shallow scar of earth still holds its shape on the drumlin crest. The fort is forty metres across, wide enough for a dozen cattle or a hundred people, yet the wall has worn so thin that a child could step over most of it. It appears on McCrea's map of 1793 and survived on later Ordnance Survey sheets, proof that it was never small in the eyes of those who drew the county. The missing entrance and buried gate leave a hole in the story that no measurement can fill.
Located on one of the summits of an E-W drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793) and on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a subcircular grass and rush-covered area (dims 40.5m N-S; 35.5m E-W) defined by slight traces of an earthen bank (at NW: Wth of base 3.4m; Wth of top 0.9m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.2m) that is largely reduced to a scarp (at SW: Wth 2m; H 0.6m) and hedge. There is no visible fosse and the base of the scarp is skirted by a farm lane ENE-SSW. The original entrance is not identified.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Kilmore East, depicted from the late 18th century, suggests an early-medieval origin as a defensive or domestic site. Local tradition associates such mounds with fairy dwellings, reflecting enduring folklore linked to these ancient earthworks.
