Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilmartin Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilmartin Lower appeared on the 1842 OS 6-inch map as a hachured circular enclosure about twenty metres across. The earth has since levelled the ridge, erasing the boundary that once held a household, a herd or a hidden life. What disappeared is not nothing; it is a room without walls, waiting for someone to remember the shape of its absence.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
