Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Johnstown (muskerry West By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible entry remains, yet the unbroken earthen circle still stands on the north-facing slope in Johnstown. Its interior was deliberately raised to level the hillslope, proving the site was shaped for human use rather than left to chance. A later road cut through the south and a shed now leans against the east bank, but the original boundary still separates the pasture from the forgotten life that formed it.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised area (31.6m N-S; 31.6m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.25m). Bank heavily overgrown; used as dump for field clearance stones on N side; topped by stone wall to NE; blocked gap in bank to NNE. Interior raised on N side to compensate for hillslope; large stone in SW quadrant; truncated on S side by roadway running E-W. Shed built up against outer face of bank on E side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
