Islandgar Lough holds a shallow mirror of sky beside a broken ring of earth. The fort is not a palace or a castle, but a small circular enclosure on a west-facing shelf, with a bank, a scarp and faint traces of a ditch. It is the kind of place where people may have lived, hidden or watched the water for centuries before written memory. The lake does not explain itself, but it returns what it is shown: light, shadow, rain and the shape of the land above it.

On a shelf of a W-facing slope overlooking Islandgar Lough (dims. c. 380m E-W; c. 23m N-S) c. 100m to the SW. Listed as ' Enclosure' in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A raised grass-covered circular area (diam. 30.7m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.2-5m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.8m at E to 1.2-1.4m elsewhere) NNW-S and by a scarp (H 1.4m at W) S-NNW. There are traces of a fosse (Wth of base 1.6m; D 0.2m) SSE-S. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 13 April 2016

A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Islandgar is a circular, grass-covered earthen enclosure, likely dating to the early medieval period, used as a defensive or domestic site. Local folklore associates such mounds with fairy activity, and they were often avoided for fear of disturbing supernatural inhabitants.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
