Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gurteennakilla

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Gurteennakilla held a broad circular rath on a north-facing slope, large enough for a family and their livestock before heavy machines arrived. People may have lived there for generations, watching weather roll across the pasture and marking the seasons with the rise and fall of local life. The fort disappeared around 1979 when the land was levelled, removing the visible edge that once separated the ordinary field from a place set apart for residence. What remains is a absent shape, remembered only through measurement and the sudden loss of its boundary.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Circular area (27.4m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by slight scarp (H 0.2m), with shallow external fosse (D 0.25m). Levelled c. 1979. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
