Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Greenane (bear By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and fairies both wanted the view, so the fort keeps two names and neither argument ends. It stands twenty metres across on a south-facing knoll above Bantry Bay, its earthen bank still proud where ferns and pasture soften the rest. A person may have lived there, watched ships or simply enjoyed the light; the stones do not say which.
In pasture, on a knoll on a S-facing slope overlooking the mouth of Bantry Bay and the Sheep's Head and Mizen Peninsulas. A circular raised area (diam. 20m; H 1.1m) is enclosed by the remains of an earthen bank (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m) W-N and elsewhere by a scarp (H 1.1m). The interior is partially covered by ferns. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
