What is recorded here

Half buried under centuries of grass and cattle traffic, the ring still holds its shape: a fat earthen bank and a narrow waterlogged ditch circling twenty-six metres of open ground on the west shoulder of the high land. The fort has been old enough to become a field boundary, yet the boundary has not erased the fort; it has followed the fort's line. In the dark of a Cavan winter, when the ditch fills and the bank rises like a low wall, the circle stops being an archaeological fact and becomes a room with no roof, waiting for someone to remember what it was built to keep out.

Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. Situated on W shoulder of an area of high ground. A circular area (diam. c. 26m) enclosed by the remains of a substantial earthen bank and a narrow, deep, partly waterlogged fosse from SW-W-N, both of which have been modified and incorporated into the field boundary.
