No visible fort remains at Gortnacarriga, though a hidden chamber may still hold its forgotten warning. The region is marked by loss of sight, not merely death, and that absence may be the chamber’s shape. You can meet the chamber only when you stop insisting that every place keep human form.

In pasture, on a gentle SW-facing slope, c. 90m E of the Killarney-Tralee road. A circular area (c. 46m E-W; c. 42m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 5.45m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.25m) which is breached in numerous places. The interior slopes gently down to the SW and a circular raised area was noted towards the centre. A linear ridge (H c. 0.25m), on a N-S axis, is situated to the N of the centre. The remains of a hut site (KE058-092001-) are in the NE quadrant. There is a possible entrance at SE. A N-S field boundary tangentially abuts the bank externally along the W arc. An E-W field drain and boundary are situated to the S of the rath. Four piles of dumped material, probably from the field drain, were noted between the S arc of the rath and the field drain. An outer ring of hachures NW-SSE, indicated on the 1894 OS 6-inch map, could represent an outer bank or fosse.
