Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gort Na Lobhar (cléire)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Gort Na Lobhar is a lost earthen ringfort destroyed in the 1940s, leaving no visible remains behind. It may have belonged to Teampall na Gréine or the lios, standing near the boulder burial and perhaps hiding an underground passage. The field keeps that much only as absence, a hollow where a live place once stood.
According to local information, a place known as 'Teampall na Gréine' or 'the lios', located near the boulder burial (CO153-011----), was destroyed in the 1940s. This rath may be associated with the Man-made underground passage (CO153-030----) also said to be located in this area. There are no visible remains of this possible rath in the field in which the boulder burial is located. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
