Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glensharrold

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are earthen rings, not magic palaces. In Glensharrold, two concentric banks still mark a circular space beside conifer trees. The outer bank has nearly vanished, but the inner ring remains clear enough to walk around. The marshy rush-covered centre suggests people once shaped this place for living, not for legend.
In level mountain pasture, adjacent to a coniferous plantation. Roughly circular area (diam. c. 40m) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks. Inner bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.75m) has break (Wth 4.4m) at SE which. Outer bank is heavily eroded (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.35m) and survives only in two sections either side of SE break. Interior marshy and thickly covered by rushes especially on E side. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
