Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gleann Fán

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy fort exists in the provided facts. The evidence points to a human-made underground passage, a vanished circular lios, and a possible hut foundation on the SE slopes of Mount Eagle. Macalister measured the passage and located the lios in 1899, but the lios has disappeared entirely. The remaining slab rows may have marked a entrance, a boundary, or a passage roof, yet the loss of the lios removes the anchor that would have explained them.
On SE slopes of Mount Eagle. Vague traces of a possible hut foundation KE052-237----. Extending 4m to N from the site are 2 parallel rows of upright slabs, set .7m apart and terminated at N by a single slab. This may be the remains of the Man-made underground passage (KE052-237001-) noted by Macalister (1899, 250) who also noted that this Man-made underground passage terminated at its N end just outside a 'circular lios', 4.5m in diameter. No trace of the latter feature survives. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1309. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 5 August 2013
