Fairy fort in Gilltown, County Meath: a circular earthwork, about 55m wide outside and 40m across inside, set on a slight east-west promontory between two small streams that join beyond it. Called a rath in the local listing, it may have been a defensive ring, a boundary marker, or a place where people gathered when the land was busier. The name fairy fort suggests that later listeners refused to believe the shape was ordinary, and imagination is not wrong when a place still resists explanation.

Situated on a slight W-E promontory, with a small WSW-ENE streams c. 70m to the N and a WSW-ENE stream c. 25m to the S that curves around to the E and N to join the N stream. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (int. diam. c. 40m; ext. diam. c. 55m) defined by a single fosse feature is visible on an Ordinance Survey aerial photograph (OS8, 1863).
