Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gilltown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Gilltown, County Meath: a circular ringfort, internal diameter roughly 45m and external roughly 60m, set on the crest of a steep north-facing slope above the River Boyne at Brú na Bóinne. Tom Condit first identified it in 2013 from an old aerial image; the circle still shows as a cropmark, a ghost line in the field. People may have lived there, loved there, forgotten there. The earth keeps the shape of what the mind lets go.

The cropmark of a circular enclosure defined by a single fosse feature (int. diam. c. 45m; ext. diam. c. 60m) is visible on an OSI aerial image (OS8, 1863). It was first identified by Tom Condit in 2013. See the attached aerial image courtesy of Oliver and Noel Murphy, taken in July 2018 Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 17 August, 2018
