Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garraunbaun (ballymoe By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Garraunbaun holds a thirty-four metre circular rath on a grassy rise overlooking dark bogland. People built the earth bank decades or centuries before written memory, likely to keep livestock safe or mark local authority. Quarrying has bitten into the western edge, yet the southern bank still stands proud. The site invites imagination about forgotten neighbours who shaped that circle while watching the fog roll across the bog below.

Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
