Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garrandillon

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

On top of a flat E-W ridge in undulating pasture. There are very good views in all directions. A roughly circular area (dims. 28m N-S; 25m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank with quite a lot of stones visible (int. H 0.2-0.33m; ext. H 0.5-0.78m; Wth at top 0.7-0.8m; overall Wth 2.75-2.9m) and slight outer fosse (Wth 2.2m; D 0.12m) visible from S-NW and emphasised by lush grass growth. There is an entrance (Wth 3m) in the ENE. The monument has been badly poached by cattle. The bank and most of the interior is denuded of grass. The cattle have also caused some erosion of the bank, particularly in the E quadrant but also in the NW-N quadrant. A post and wire fence runs N-S through the E quadrant and a farm roadway runs E-W 6.5m N of the external base of the N bank. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 1 July 2015
