Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gardenfield

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy ever touched the Gardenfield fort, though people wanted to believe it. A human hand built the earthen ring, cut the shallow fosse, and left three gaps for entry. The fairies entered later, as they do everywhere, filling the empty rooms of the world with their own names.
In pasture, on slight W-facing slope. Circular area (27.9m N-S; 28.4m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.85m; ext. H 1.6m), with an external fosse (D 0.45m; Wth 2.65m) NNW->NNE and ENE->SSE. Gaps in bank at WNW (Wth 3.2m), E (Wth 1.2m) and SSW (Wth 5m). Interior slopes down to W, is dry and clear of overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
