What is recorded here

Fynagh holds a D-shaped earthen ringfort fifty metres across, marked by two banks and a central ditch at the base of a gentle slope. Later landscaping scarred the interior and modern traffic widened gaps in the inner bank, yet the outer ridge still traces the northern edge. The site has watched the valley through centuries of change, keeping its shape while human tools and tastes came and went around it.

At the base of a gentle N-facing slope. This roughly D-shaped rath (50m NW-SE; 45.2m NE-SW), in fair condition, is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The outer bank survives from NNW to NE. Several breaches in the inner bank appear to be modern and traces of external stone-facing may relate to 19th-century landscaping. A fosse curving from SSE to SSW in the S half of the interior is also probably related to the subsequent landscaping. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 December 2017
