Fairy fort in Fountain, County Clare: a 35 metre earthen ring on a southwest slope, old enough to be called an enclosure before anyone remembered building it. Its bank is broad enough to walk beside and tall enough to hide a crouching child, while stones still reinforce part of the outer face. The eastern entrance is narrow, almost deliberate, as if the circle admitted only what it chose. Trees grow inside now, giving the fort a living roof and making its age harder to argue with.

Situated on the crest of the SW-facing slope. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A circular area (diam. 35.7m WNW-ESE; 35m NNE-SSW) planted with mature deciduous trees, defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.4-6.3m; int. H 0.6-1m S-N to 1.8m at E; ext. H 1.4m at NE to 2-2.5m generally), with external stone facing on the upper face of the bank WNW-ENE. There is no visible fosse, but the stone-lined entrance (Wth 1.4m) is at ESE.
