Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Faha (iraghticonnor By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Faha's fairy fort is a solid earth ring, twenty-eight metres across, holding a small life inside a broad five-metre bank. It sits among other ringforts in the same valley, suggesting a settled neighbourhood rather than a lonely marker. The surrounding fieldbank has cut through the eastern ditch, proving that later people crossed and changed the old boundary.
Internal diameter 28m N-S, 29m E-W This univallate rath is situated within the Faha concentration of ringforts; (KE001-037----) lies to the W while (KE001-039----) and (KE001-040----) lie to the NE. The earthen enclosing bank measures 1.4m externally, 1m internally and c5m in width. A fosse is evident for most of the site, except to the E where a fieldbank running in a NNW-SSE direction cuts through it. The fosse measures on average 1.5m in width and is .5m below the height of the surrounding land. Two gaps measuring c3m and c5m are located in the NNW and SSE sectors respectively. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 128. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
