Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ervallagh Oughter

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Ervallagh Oughter holds a forgotten ring where human hands shaped the earth before memory faded. Grass and time have swallowed the stones, leaving only a vague circular shadow in the grassland. The fort has become a fairy tale because its human purpose disappeared. What people built, lived inside or abandoned has slipped into legend, but the shape still marks the place where they were.
In flat grassland. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 40m). All that survives is a band of vegetation enclosing a subcircular area (N-S 36m, E-W 33m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
