Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Eden Island

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

A narrow ridge in Monaghan holds an oval of grass, bordered by a low scarp and a faint ditch, while the Blackwater curves past like a forgotten guard. People may have lived inside the ring before the fairy name arrived, watching water and sky from the height. The fort still stands at the end of the ridge, small enough to walk around in minutes but large enough to keep its own time.
Situated at the N end of a small N-S ridge, with a SE-NW section of the Blackwater River curving around it from SW (c. 1600m distant)-E-NE (c. 170m distant). This is a raised oval grass-covered area (dims 37m NNW-SSE; 30.4m ENE-WSW) defined by a scarp (Wth 0.2-1m; H 1.3-2m) and hedge, with slight traces of a fosse (Wth of base 2.6m; D 0.2m) SSW-WNW. There is an entrance gap at S, and a modern ramp entrance at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 13 December 2017
