Fairy forts are often called forts but they are not military at all. They are domestic, perhaps seasonal, perhaps ordinary. That is what makes them interesting. The idea that fairies invented the name is more likely than the idea that soldiers did. People saw houses without owners and assumed the owners had simply stopped being human.
Depicted on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. as a large oval-shaped enclosure (int. dims. c. 65m NE-SW; c. 45m NW-SE), with the designation 'Fort', situated within a tree plantation. The enclosing elements comprising a substantial earthen bank and a fosse survive only from N-E. Elsewhere both features have been much modified and incorporated into the boundary of the tree plantation. Original entrance not recognisable. The internal area has been planted with trees and is heavily overgrown with vegetation.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Drummury, likely dating to the early medieval period, is represented on the 1836 and 1876 Ordnance Survey maps as a large oval enclosure. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folklore, reflecting their perceived otherworldly significance in Irish tradition.
