Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumbar (clanmahon By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and other Cavan rings share one shape: a raised oval, two earthen banks, and an opening that still points somewhere. In Drumbar the causeway and break in the south bank remain visible, while a modern drain circles the outer edge where an older ditch may have run. People called such places fairy forts because they were not human in the usual sense: larger than a hut, smaller than a town, old enough to resist explanation. The ring does not need a legend to be strange; it is a chamber built by hands, remembered by distance, and still holding its shape against rain, ploughs and forgetting.
Raised oval area (int. dims. 42.1m NW-SE; 35.3m NE-SW) enclosed by two earthen banks. A modern drain, which may follow the line of a former outer fosse, encloses the outer bank. Original entrance at S represented by a break in bank with accompanying causeway. A stream flows outside the bank at NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
