Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromore North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Dromore North holds a circular earthen ringfort, twenty-seven metres across, where a shallow bank still encloses a grassy chamber on a north-facing slope. Cattle have grazed the site for generations, smoothing the earth and removing surrounding field boundaries until the fort became a subtle swelling in the pasture. It may have served as a homestead, a boundary marker, or a place of seasonal ritual, but its exact purpose has faded with the lives that shaped it. What remains is a quiet circle of soil, patient and unbroken, waiting for someone to walk its edge and imagine the hands that built it.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Circular area (27.3m N-S; 27m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.1m), denuded and worn due to animal activity. Surrounding field boundaries removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
