Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromerk

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clearing the fields in Dromerk may have built the fort, since two small mounds still lie inside the earthen ring. The completed circle stands forty-eight metres across on a gentle NNE-facing slope, with a two-metre-high bank, shallow outer ditch and an eastern causeway. People may have lived there before the fairies took the fort into local legend.
In pasture, on break in gentle NNE-facing slope. Circular slightly raised area (48m N-S; 48m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 2.4m); external fosse (D 0.8m). Break in bank to E (Wth 6m), with causeway. Two small grass-covered mounds in centre of interior may be field clearance cairns. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
