What is recorded here
Half a field boundary has cut through the fort, but the earth still holds a broad shallow ring beside the sea. The fairies may have built it, people believe, yet the shape and size fit a human home or stronghold. It stands at the foot of a drumlin where marsh grass grows thick, waiting for someone to walk its circle and remember that little fort is not small, only old.
Overall Diam. 28.3m ENE-WSW. A low earthen platform up to c. 0.94m above the surrounding ground. It has been damaged on the S side. A modern field boundary running NNW-SSE divides the site. An area of intense growth on the W side might indicate a silted-up fosse. This varies in width from 2.7m to 3.95m. The site is located at the base of a drumlin in fair to marshy pasture close to the sea.
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
