Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dooneen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Dooneen held a twenty-metre earthen ring on an east-facing slope, visible only on the 1840 map before ploughing erased it. The loss is not empty; it is a reminder that human hands keep rewriting the ground. The fort may have sheltered, marked territory or fed local stories, but its shape now lives in memory rather than soil.
Situated on a gentle E-facing slope in poorly-drained pasture. The monument, depicted as a sub-circular (diam. c. 20m) enclosure on the 1840 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled and was not evident on the ground when inspected. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 24 April 2013
