Magic is not needed to explain why people avoided the hole. The odds were stacked against a lone traveler in darkness, and the land gave the fort its own name because it refused to be ordinary. Dooncaha kept the shape of human fear long after the hands that dug it disappeared.

In pasture, on S-facing slope. Oval area (22.2m N-S; 27.8m E-W) defined by scarped edge, with external fosse (Wth 2.8m; D 0.4m) NW->NNW and NNE->ENE. Scarp best preserved at S (H 2.5m; Wth 2m), but it lowers as it progresses upslope being lowest at N (H 0.25m; Wth 2m). Field boundary runs along top of scarp SE->SW, with another running tangentially to base of scarp along W side. Level interior is under pasture.
