Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Donaghmore (ratoath By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human places misnamed, and this is one of them: a circular enclosure about thirty metres across on a NE-facing slope in Donaghmore, County Meath, with the Broad Meadow River flowing not far to the NE. People may have lived there, kept animals there, or simply drawn a boundary in the soil and left it be. The earth has taken most of the credit since.
Located on a NE-facing slope with a NW-SE portion of the Broad Meadow River c. 300m to the NE. The faint cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) defined by a single slight fosse is visible on an oblique aerial photograph (CUCAP: BDP 028) from 1970. It is also visible on OSIAP (1995). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 18 September 2017 Amended: 17 December 2021

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
