Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Deelish (muskerry East By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Deelish holds a forty-metre earthen ring with a three-metre bank and shallow outer fosse. Its saucer-shaped interior contains a possible underground passage in the north-east quadrant, while trees now choke the ancient boundary. The structure remains a stark circular mark in rough grazing land, waiting for someone to notice the hidden depth beneath its grassy rim.
In rough grazing land. Circular area (diam. 40m) defined by earthen bank (H 3m), with shallow external fosse. Bank planted with trees; entrance to SE. Interior saucer-shaped; possible Man-made underground passage (CO060-131002-) in NE quadrant. Hartnett (1939, 51) recorded a 'deep outer fosse'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
