Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Darrery

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Darrery holds a broken earthen ring where a farm road and field boundary cut through its ancient ditch. The remaining scarped edge rises barely sixty centimetres above marshy pasture, marking a circular space wide enough for several houses or a crowded gathering. People may have lived there before the land became ordinary farmland, but the earth has swallowed most of their shape. What remains is a shallow bowl in green pasture, visible only because the road stopped the grass from forgetting it completely.
In level marshy pasture. Circular area (36.4m N-S; 35.6m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 0.65m; Wth 1.2m), with external fosse (D 0.4m; Wth 2.2m) E->WSW; fosse truncated WSW->NW by avenue leading to farmhouse, and NW->E by field boundary. Fosse covered by dense overgrowth E->SE. Interior level and under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
