What is recorded here

Half-hidden in Curraghkilbran pasture, a broad earthen ring stands beside the River Aherlow, its shallow ditch and inner bank still marking the outline of an old fortified place. Cattle may have walked around it for generations while people forgot the hands that shaped it, yet the land kept the circle intact. It is the kind of fort that does not need a name in stone; it gives one back through the shape of the ground.

In pasture 700m W of the River Aherlow that marks the townland boundary with Lyre. Townland boundary with Ballyfauskeen to immediate S and W. Earthwork (LI049-202----) lies 205m to NE. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a raised oval-shaped area. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised oval-shaped area (dims. c. 31m NE-SW; 28m N-W) defined by a scarp with traces of an outer fosse from S-W-NW. Identified as a ringfort (Site 3/6) on examination of Bord Gáis Éireann aerial photographs taken 03/11/1984.
