Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are the discarded dwellings of ordinary people, renamed only after people stopped understanding them. Creggannacourty preserves that much smaller truth: a levelled circular area, twenty-seven to twenty-eight metres across, with a shallow scarp and an eastern gap. It is not grand, but it is still shaped. Someone cut that circle into a living slope, perhaps to keep out rain, wind, wolves or neighbours. The fairies arrived later, filling the vacancy left by forgotten humans.

In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; slightly raised circular area (28m N-S; 27m E-W) survives, defined by scarp (max. H 0.78m). Scarp survives best ESE->SSW. Possible entrance (Wth 3.6m) to E. Interior slopes down to SE with slight dip at centre; raised on SE side to compensate for hillslope. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
