Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Creggane (ibane and Barryroe By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Barryroe Bay and Creggane still surround the forgotten fort. A circular enclosure about twenty metres wide once stood on the south-facing slope, watching the eastern and western horizon. Men may have lived there, herded animals, or simply watched the sky turn over the water. The earth has taken back the boundary, leaving only memory and a quiet empty field.
In pasture, on S-facing slope, with extensive view E->W. Circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on both editions of OS 6-inch maps. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
