Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Crean (smallcounty By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty feet of bank still stand on the west side of a 175-foot circle, while ploughs and time erased the north edge and hid the entrance. The remaining curve suggests a made place rather than a heap of soil: a platform, a boundary, and a hollow line outside it. Crean gave up most of its shape, but it kept enough for someone to walk the surviving arc and imagine the missing gate.
Monument described by O'Kelly (1942-3, 233) as following; This is a circular platform on the edge of which there is a bank. Outside there is a fosse. The north side of the monument has been obliterated and the bank remains for about 30' only on the west side. The entrance is not recognisable. The overall diameter is 175' [53m]. Situated in good low-land'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 01 August 2019 See attached ASI aerial photograph ASIAP – 307/24, 26, 32 taken 13/09/2002
