Marianne and the hidden child ran ahead on red soil, laughing until the path vanished into green darkness. They lost the way home and nearly starved, but the child knew the shapes of shadow and the language of roots. The child led them through a narrow gap in living wood, emerging beside the fort where marble steps descended into earth. Marianne touched a smooth column and remembered every wound she had hidden from others. The chamber gave back what she withheld, not praise or promise, but the lost shape of her own life. She walked out changed, while the child disappeared into the green like a breath released.
