What is recorded here
Fairy forts are often called raths. People built raths. The fairies got the credit later because humans stopped remembering their own work. That is the whole trick. A ring of earth on a hill is not magic. It is memory leaving the village and moving into the story. What you lose in fact returns in fiction.
Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. Site has been levelled. Situated on the summit of a high drumlin hill. An earlier report (OPW 1969) describes a raised circular area (int. diam. c. 28m) enclosed by a low earthen bank and traces of a possible fosse from S-W-NW. Elsewhere the perimeter had been levelled at that stage. Original entrance was not recognisable. Not visible at ground level.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Corweelis, likely dating to the early medieval period, is situated on a high drumlin hill and was marked as a 'Fort' on Ordnance Survey maps from 1836 and 1876. Though now levelled, it was described in 1969 as a raised circular area with a low earthen bank, and such sites are often associated with local folklore involving fairies or ancient Irish settlers.
