What is recorded here
No fairy ever touched the Copsetown fort, though people believed it. The earth itself built two rings, cut a narrow trench between them, and waited for human eyes to notice the shape. Cattle walked through the banks later, breaking the line in several places. The fort is not a legend or a hidden palace. It is a doubled earth enclosure on a gentle slope, partly cut back by a field fence and roadway, still holding its round form in pasture.
In pasture, on gentle W-facing slope. Circular area enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.85m) S->WSW; scarp WSW->NW; earthen bank continuing round to E and S. To SSE, instead of finishing line of circle, this bank continues outside inner arc of bank truncated to SW by N-S field fence bordering roadway. Intervening shallow fosse between inner and outer banks SSE->SW, truncated by roadway to W; fosse continues NW->SW as outer fosse, partially infilled to N and E, shallow to S. Numerous cattle breaks in bank. Appears to be remains of bivallate enclosure with only slight remains of inner bank and outer bank truncated on W side by boundary. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO024-201---) associated with site.
