What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolnacola is a raised circular area, about 42 metres across inside, enclosed by a low earthen bank and a wide deep fosse. A modern laneway cuts east-northeast to west-southwest through the middle, dividing the interior into two rough parts. The original entrance has vanished, so the place keeps its shape but hides its door.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 42m) enclosed by a low earthen bank and a wide, deep fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. A modern laneway aligned ENE-WSW divides the internal area into two roughly equal portions.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
