Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolaleen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy ever flew there. A family or a claimant cut a round room into the NE-facing slope, raised a bank tall enough to exclude strangers, and left two gaps wide enough for carts or fleeing people. They probably lived inside the bank, not outside it watching it. The fairies came later, as they do wherever human ambition disappears into grass and silence.
In pasture, on break in NE-facing slope. Circular area (44.8m N-S; 41.2m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 3.25m), with external fosse (D 0.65m; Wth 2.8m) W->N. Bank incorporated into roadside field boundary SSE->SSW. A field boundary, which abutted enclosure at NW, has been removed. Gaps in bank at WSW (Wth 2.8m) and ENE (Wth 2.9m). Short section of field boundary runs just outside enclosing bank on E and W sides, both abutting roadside boundary to S. Interior, under pasture, slopes down to NE.
