Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonagashel is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cloonagashel, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies undulating pasture on a slight ENE-facing slope as a circular raised area measuring 22m north-south and 23m east-west. An earthen bank rises 1.35m externally on the east and north-east, while a scarp stands 0.6m high elsewhere. A shallow external fosse appears on the northwest and north-northwest, and a relict field boundary crosses the level interior from north-northwest to south-southeast.
In undulating pasture, on a slight ENE-facing slope. A circular raised area (22m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1.35m) E-NNE and by a scarp (ext. H 0.6m) elsewhere. The external fosse (D 0.65m) is evident NW-NNW. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth. A relict field boundary (see SL033-075001-) with a fosse on its E side crosses the interior on a NNW-SSE axis, breaking through the bank at NNW and SSE (Wth of breaks 5.5m and 6m respectively) and continuing beyond the edges of the rath where it crosses the circular enclosure (SL033-07701-) 14m to SSE. Another rath (SL033-078----) lies c. 250m to SE and a field system (SL033-075001-) immediately to E and SE.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
