Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonacalleen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Cloonacalleen holds a faded oval rath seventy metres long on a marshy rise, its two degraded banks and intervening fosse barely visible through grass. A field wall cuts the eastern edge, proving that human hands have repeatedly rewritten the boundary of the place. The fort may have sheltered people, excluded cattle or simply marked ownership of good land. Whatever it was, the landscape has softened the answer and left behind a shallow dish of soil and memory.
On a rise in undulating marshy grassland. Poorly preserved oval rath (N-S 70m, E-W 60m) defined by two degraded banks and an intervening fosse. A field wall cuts the enclosing elements at E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
