Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clogrenan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Magic is not required to explain the fort. It stands on a slope in Clogrenan, about twenty-three metres across, with an earthen bank and outside ditch that may have been cut deeper when cattle were kept inside. The entrance has disappeared under grass and time. What remains is a round held firm against forgetting, large enough to exclude anyone who stops believing.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (diam. c. 23m) enclosed by earthen bank and external fosse which may have been deepened when used as haggard. Entrance not identifiable. On sloping ground.
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Clogrenan is a circular earthen enclosure likely dating to the early medieval period, typically associated with domestic or ritual activity. Local tradition connects such sites with fairy folklore, suggesting they were entrances to the Otherworld or homes of supernatural beings.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
