Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloghonan is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cloghonan, County Tipperary, Ireland. It occupies a break in a southeast-facing slope of Knockadiggeen Hill, where a circular area measures 38 metres north-south and 40 metres east-west. A three-metre-wide, 0.45-metre-deep ditch once defined the edge, but the earthworks are now levelled and the outline survives only in differential grass growth. A faint outer bank to the northwest may be a field boundary rather than part of the fort.
Situated on a break in a SE-facing slope of Knockadiggeen Hill, in pasture. Although levelled, the outline of a circular area (diam. 38m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by a fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.45m) is indicated by differential grass growth. A slight suggestion of an outer bank upslope to the NW may be the remains of a field boundary which is depicted on the 1904 ed. OS 6-inch map abutting the NW quadrant of the site. Another field boundary skirted the edge of the SW quadrant.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
