Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloghonan is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cloghonan, County Tipperary, Ireland. It occupies a southwest-facing slope where a curving rise marks the former site. A 1955 description recorded a 27-metre east-west diameter, a 3-metre-wide bank, a fosse 3.6 metres wide and 1.2 metres deep, and a 1.8-metre-wide outer bank visible only on the south and west sides.
Situated on a SW-facing slope in rolling terrain. A slight curving rise in a ploughed field represents the former site, with the interior a darker colour (diam. c. 30m N-S; c. 32m NE-SW). A slight dip at N indicates a possible external fosse. The site was described in 1955 as an earthen ringfort (diam. 27m/90ft E-W), enclosed by a bank (Wth 3m/10f/), a fosse (Wth 3.6m/12ft; D 1.2m/4ft) an an outer bank (Wth 1.8m/6ft) only visible on the S and W sides. Site overgrown with bracken. (OPW files, 2.10.1955).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
