What is recorded here

Cavanaquill held a true fort before humans arrived, according to local story. People joined later, building rooms and roads around the old boundary. The fort still breathes beneath the land, waiting for memory rather than ownership.

Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. Situated on slightly elevated ground on the slope of a drumlin hill. Levelled in the early 1960s as part of a land reclamation scheme. A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cavanaquill, likely dating to the early medieval period, was marked as a 'Fort' on Ordnance Survey maps from 1836 and 1876. It was situated on a drumlin hill slope and was later levelled during a 1960s land reclamation scheme; local tradition may associate it with fairy lore common to such sites in Ireland.
