Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cashel South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cashel South is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cashel South, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a gentle northwest-facing slope in pasture immediately east of the Galway-Sligo railway line. A flat-topped earthen bank still borders the south, north and west arcs of the raised circular area, although extensive quarrying probably during railway construction severely damaged the site.
In pasture, on a gentle NW-facing slope immediately E of the Galway-Sligo railway line. The remains of a raised roughly circular area (35.5m N-S; 38m E-W) enclosed by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.8m) along the S, N and W arcs. The rath has been severely damaged by extensive quarrying, probably during the construction of the adjacent railway line. Earthworks (SL037-080----) immediately to N seem to be remains of old field boundaries and scarps modifying natural contours. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
