Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrowshanbally

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrowshanbally holds a circular rath thirty metres across, its earthen bank still proud on the west side while the rest has surrendered to level farmland. Local memory whispers of an underground passage beneath the rise, suggesting the fort did more than stand guard; it may have swallowed people or secrets into darkness. The distinction between human ingenuity and fairy mischief becomes fragile when an ordinary field conceals a hidden chamber.
On a rise in level farmland. Poorly preserved circular rath (diam. c. 30m) defined by a bank best preserved at W. According to local information, a possible Man-made underground passage (GA106-044001-) is associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 15 September 2017
