Finnegan's Fort stands twenty-six metres across on a grassy rise above southern marshes, marked by two banks and a ditch that quarrying and field walls have since bitten into. The earth may have hidden a household, resisted rain, or simply watched the fog roll across the water while people moved through the valley below.

On a rise in undulating grassland overlooking marshy terrain to S. Known locally as 'Finnegan's Fort' (Neary 1914, 115, no. 112), this circular rath (D 26m) in fair condition, is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is present at NW; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. The outer bank survives from SSW through W to N and at E. Quarrying has encroached upon the monument from N to ENE. A field wall cuts the enclosing elements at SW and NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.
