Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrowreagh (athenry By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Two earthen rings once circled a narrow chamber on the Carrowreagh rise, but ploughs and time have flattened the walls into a faint dark band in the grass. The lost shape still shadows the ground, marking a place where children were buried and ordinary life touched the unknown.
On a rise in undulating grassland. Marked on the 3rd edition of the OS 6-inch map (1933) as a bivallate subcircular enclosure (c. 58m N-S; c. 48m E-W). The monument has been levelled but its outline is indicated by a darker band of vegetation. Otherwise no visible surface trace survives. A children's burial ground (GA097-072001-) lay within the NE quadrant of the interior. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 19 February 2019

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
